RECRUITING IN IRELAND, 1879

I love this painting by Lady Elizabeth Butler (1846-1933). It is one dealing with the Galway-based Connaught Rangers.

The resignation of the fellow with the clay pipe and the uncertainity of his cousin looking over his shoulder. The ruined cottage on the left shows the conditions that  prompted Irishmen to join the British Army up-to and including the First World War.

The work is on loan at the moment from Bury Art Museum, Manchester.
