My Sacred Space

Thank God, I have very few worries in my life at present. Each day two simple things have become important to me: my afternoon walk (2 hours) and my afternoon coffee and danish. I wear headphones while walking and listen to Lyric fm on my small pocket radio. Half way through my walk I have my coffee in some small restaurant. These couple of hours have become sacred for me.

A Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk recommends that one should  ‘Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the earth revolves – slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future.’ For a cup of coffee to change you, you have to create a sacred space in your heart for that cuppa. Something happens in that sacred space and the simple act becomes important, bringing peace and contentment.

We can so often crank through things these days — emails, social networks, news, calls, meetings, deadlines — and then the day we've been given is gone. Of course, any little things in our day can be turned into sacred spaces.
