ASH WEDNESDAY

Today, Ash Wednesday, is observed by Christians. It is the first day of Lent which is a period of 40 days of sorrow and fasting before the feast of Easter. A cross of ashes is placed on one's forehead as a sign of penance for sin. "Repent, and believe in the Gospel."

Personally, I prefer to see it as a profession of one's belief and joy on being blessed by God and redeemed by the cross of Christ.
