Punchestown Race Course is near my hometown in County Kildare, in Ireland. Kildare is called horse-country as, because of its rich flat grassy landscape, it is home to many training stables.

In April each year it runs a very popular week-long National Hunt Racing Festival. Because of its special athmosphere it is one of the highlights of the Irish sporting and social calendar.

Last Sunday I was at Punchestown myself for its traditional 'Walking Sunday'. Originally this was a day before the Race Festival when owners, jockeys and their friends came to walk the course.

Nowadays it is a fun day out with many events for all the family - Music, dog walks, dog shows, raffles, fancy dress competition, bouncing castles, tea and refreshments, foot racing along the ambulance track, looking at the many steeplechase fences, etc.

Having been reared near that particular race-track, Walking Sunday is a great opportunity to renew acquaintance with old school pals and neighbours.
