A Lament for Ireland

My generation is the remnant of old Ireland. In the words of WB Yeats: “Romantic Ireland is dead and gone, it’s with O’Leary in the grave.” Will it ever be rebuilt? Many will say that such an Ireland is not worth salvaging!

Ireland is now post-national, post-history, post-Christian, post-heteronormative, post-gender and, when you think about it, post-Ireland. All that will be left to us that is recognisably Irish will be Guinness, Irish music, and Gaelic Games (because the tourists like those!).
