A Night at the Opera (well, not quite)

I usually take an hour's walk at about 7.00pm and listen to some classical music on my headphones as I go. Tonight Radio Éireann aired its recent recording of La Cour de Céliméne by Ambroise Thomas (1811-1896) which is being produced in our local opera house during this year's Opera Festival. It is a French opéra-comique of the 1850s but has had only nineteen performances since! Listening to it on radio I was surprised and amazed at how good it sounded! Beautiful music, well played and well sung. Returning, I passed the entrance to the Opera House and watched the opera-goers arrive in style for tonight's production of Gianni di Parigi by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848).
