Durrow High Cross

The Durrow High Cross in Co. Offaly has finally got a roof over its head. The cross was carved over 1,100 years ago from a single piece of stone and has been standing beside an old monastery church now in ruins. The cross has recently been carried into a new church to save it from further erosion. With under-floor heat-ing and a window in the roof it is now protected and shown in natural light.
The east facet of the cross (seen here outdoors) shows details of Christ with sceptre and cross, a piper, David with his harp, David with a Lion, the raised Christ, two angels hovering over SS. Peter & Paul, Celtic interlace, and the sacrifice of Isaac. The other facets show other biblical scenes.
