Church Unity Octave

In January every year Christians of all denominations are reminded of the importance of Christian unity by setting aside a week called the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This year it was celebrated as usual last week (18-25th).

This year the theme chosen for this special celebration was "What does God require of us?"  (cf. Micah 6:6-8). The answer given is: "to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"

In the context of great injustice to the Dalits of that country, this year the Church in India was invited to prepare resources for the week. Unity cannot be disassociated from the dismantling of casteism. The Dalits are considered 'out-castes’, ‘untouchables’, a system based on notions of ritual purity and pollution. Almost 80% of Indian Christians have a Dalit background.

We in the so called 'advanced' west have our own outcasts and rejects of course and we're even less honest than those on the subcontinent in admitting to the fact.
The churches in India remain divided along the doctrinal divisions inherited from Europe and elsewhere.
