Billy Colfer RIP

BK0632-B-210x300Last weekend many here in Wexford were saddened to learn of the death of Billy Colfer. Billy, a native of the area, worked as a teacher in Wexford’s CBS Primary School where he inspired at least two generations to appreciate the local scene. He was an expert on the Anglo-Norman settlement of south-west Co. Wexford. In this he used aerial photography, historical sources as well as an in-depth knowledge of the landscape to build up a comprehensive picture of this period.

He published a lavishly illustrated and authoritative book on Wexford town in 2008: Wexford, a Town and It's Landscape and later brought a manuscript on the castles of Co. Wexford to completion. He was also a noted painter.

He was 73 and leaves a wife, Noreen, and five sons. May he rest in peace.
