European Tree of the Year

With the Irish Taoiseach (PM) at present President of the European Union, an ancient Irish oak tree (the King Oak near Tullamore) has been chosen as the Irish entry in the Tree of Europe Competition for 2013 which takes place 28th February.

The three competitors are: a Plane tree in Kozy (Poland), a Plane tree in Eger (Hungary), and the King Oak (Ireland).

The King Oak has dominated the demesne of Charleville Estate in Tullamore, Co Offaly, for more than 400 years. It is a fine example of a quercus robur and is believed to be descended from Ireland’s original oak forests. The lower branches now touch the ground and stretch to 50 metres.
