Dordán Dúlra

Teachers in a very small rural Primary School on Erris Head, Co. Mayo, here in Ireland, have been encouraging their young pupils to be more aware of the beauties of nature all around them. They initiated a project called Dordán Dúlra (Nature's Call) that involved the 31 pupils recording their impressions of their immediate surroundings in three separate galleries, from ages 5 thru 7, 8 thru 10, and 11 thru 13.

During St. Patrick's weekend the resulting artwork, accompanied by music of the area, was projected at night on the gable end of the school in front of an attendance of parents and neighbours. A video of the childrens' work can be found at "Ecology Kids" on http://www.ecology.com/2013/03/15/nature%e2%80%99s-call-dordan-dulra/

The small school also promotes a programme which includes an organic garden, waste management and recycling initiatives. Other schools could take a leaf from the book of very small Erris Head Primary.
