Lake Baikal Challenge

We in Ireland have been complaining of the recent continuous harsh weather we have had for the last few weeks. Spare a thought then for the Irish adventurers Clare O’Leary and Mike O’Shea who have, last night, successfully completed their trek along the length of the frozen 25 million-year-old Lake Baikal in southeastern Siberia. Baikal, which extends over 3.15 million hectares to a depth of 1,700m, is the world’s oldest and deepest lake and holds 20 per cent of the planet’s fresh running water.

Only a handful of people have transited the lake during its frozen season before.

I have got a friend kharit-on-off.livejournal.com who spend almost every March making awesome photos of Baikal's incredible ice and beautiful landscapes.
