Vatican Joins Venice Biennale for First Time

While I was reading about Ireland's exhibition for this year's Venice Biennale the other day I learned that the Vatican was participating for the first time. With its wonderful collection of art over the centuries I was amazed to see that this would be its first appearance in Venice. And there are no Rembrandts, etc.

It's chosen theme for the exhibition is Creation/unCreation/re-Creation, the fundamental theme for culture and for Church tradition, and the source of inspiration for many whose works have left a mark on the history of art i.e. the story told in the first 11 chapters of the Book of Genesis.

In summary:

Three artists commissioned for works inspired by Genesis
Works divided into "creation," "uncreation," "re-creation"
Works not liturgical or religious but thoroughly modern.
