Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Ten years ago Ireland was "on the pig's back" and the "Celtic Tiger" was alive and well: houses were selling, there were continental holidays, plenty of employment, dining out, and kids were being pampered.

Since 2008, however, all has changed and we have been in deep, deep recession: mortgages can't be repaid, families are broken up, emigration is rife, there is huge unemployment, and children often go to bed hungry.

Yesterday my LJ friend  http://cairistiona7 posted a short video 'Have yourself a merry little Christmas'; in which Judy Garland tried to tell her sad little daughter why there will be no Christmas this year but if she tried to continue smiling loved ones who had gone away might return and a Merry Christmas would be had again by all.

Some reasonably might ask: Judy Garland? Who is Judy Garland?

Comments

You're kidding of course. Everybody knows who Judy Garland is. :)
Just kidding.
Those monkeys are a little creepy. Poor Ireland - you do seem to have a solid basis for recovering, from what I understand about it.
They tell that there is a faint light at the end of a very dark tunnel. Let's hope so.
Recession is felt so very keenly at Christmas time. I hope economic recovery comes soon to all nations.

I had always assumed everyone knew who Judy Garland was, but I know at least one person commented on my post that she wasn't familiar with her. Never assume, I suppose! On the other hand, I'm also trying to mix in some Christmas music that might be new to people, so in that regard... success. :)
Keep up the good work. You have lovely stuff there.
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it (and I fear January will seem very, very quiet...)
Oh how beautiful her voice was!
How very lovely. Thank you for posting this.
That song (with the original lyrics from the movie, as in that video - it was re-written with slightly more hopeful lyrics at Frank Sinatra's request), and "I'll Be Home For Christmas" by Bing Crosby, are the two saddest Christmas songs ever written. (Bing Crosby? Who's Bing Crosby? Oh, yeah, the old guy who sang a duet with David Bowie...)
I think she's telling her little sister, actually...

Thoughtful post. Thank you.
